About South Street Bonfire Society

South Street Bonfire Society is one of the historic societies that make up the Lewes bonfire community and is rooted in the South Street area of the town.

The society combines a strong local identity with participation in the wider traditions of Sussex Bonfire. Its members and volunteers work throughout the year to raise funds, organise events and prepare for the annual Fifth of November celebrations.

Although every Lewes society has its own customs and character, they share a commitment to maintaining traditions that have become an important part of the town’s cultural heritage.

The Annual Bonfire Celebrations

On 5 November, South Street members take part in the torchlit processions that transform Lewes after dark.

Members in striped guernseys and elaborate Pioneer costumes are joined by banners, ceremonial pieces and visiting bonfire societies. Hundreds of burning torches provide the processions with their unmistakable appearance as they move through the streets.

The evening commemorates the failure of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and remembers the 17 Protestant martyrs burned in Lewes during the sixteenth century.

For spectators, it is a dramatic annual spectacle. For members, it represents the culmination of many months of preparation.

A Strong Local Identity

South Street’s connection with its part of Lewes gives the society a particularly strong community identity.

Its traditions have been maintained through generations of members, with costumes, processional customs and society events all helping to preserve that connection with the past.
