About Commercial Square Bonfire Society
Commercial Square Bonfire Society is one of the historic societies responsible for maintaining Lewes’s remarkable Fifth of November traditions.
With roots stretching back into the nineteenth century, Commercial Square has become an established part of the town’s bonfire community. Generations of members have contributed to its processions, ceremonies and events, creating traditions that continue to be maintained today.
Like the other Lewes societies, Commercial Square is a volunteer-led organisation, with members working throughout the year to prepare for November and support the wider bonfire community.
The Annual Bonfire Celebrations
The Fifth of November represents the culmination of the society’s year.
Commercial Square members take part in torchlit processions through Lewes, accompanied by banners, costumes, ceremonial pieces and visiting bonfire societies. The sight of hundreds of burning torches moving through the historic streets creates the atmosphere that has made Lewes Bonfire internationally recognised.
The celebrations commemorate the failure of the Gunpowder Plot and remember the 17 Protestant martyrs burned in Lewes during the sixteenth century.
After the processions, the society’s celebrations continue with its bonfire and fireworks display.
Tradition and Identity
Commercial Square has developed its own identity within the wider Lewes Bonfire tradition.
Its distinctive society dress, Pioneer costumes, banners and ceremonial customs help distinguish its members during the processions. These traditions are maintained by members who understand that Bonfire is as much about preserving heritage as creating a spectacle.
Passing those customs to younger and newer members ensures that the society continues to evolve without losing its connection with the past.
Community and Membership
Much of the work required to make the Fifth possible takes place away from the crowds.
Throughout the year, Commercial Square members organise fundraising activities, attend social events and undertake the practical preparations required for November. Members also travel across Sussex to support other societies during their celebrations.
Joining Commercial Square provides an opportunity to participate directly in Lewes Bonfire while becoming part of a year-round community.
